Supervisors publishing with their students

The one area that always seems to create debate amongst supervisors is whether or not their name should appear on the publications their student's generate.  I know their are codes of practice within universities on this, but it is still an area of tension.  My personal view is that if the student publishes simply as a result of their research studies then the publication is theirs.  If they publish something where the supervisor has made a direct contribution to the publication itself (ie…

Developing Candidates Research Identity

In a discussion with one of my students last week the issue came up about how they view their PhD journey.  A point we were reflecting on was how the process is developing their identity as a researcher and it struck me how important the wider research culture is within the university in supporting the PhD students research identity development.  One point that came up was how some of the administrative staff treat some of the PhD students as the 'bottom of the food chain' and I was…

When we were carrying out the research that has contributed to the development of this site, we asked the interviewees to reflect on the supervision they received when they were candidates.  Some interviewees went on to reflect on how they felt they performed/behaved as research students in addition to how their supervisors performed/behaved.

As the group designing this toolkit, this was a point for us to reflect on as none of us had done this when we were originally putting together…
